Michael Shaps Meritage 2014
Two time Gold medal winner at the Governor's Cup in 2017 and 2018. We believe that the Bordeaux blends produce some of Virginia’s best and more expressive wines. The art of blending different varieties from different vineyards highlights the nuances of each of our vineyard sites. Our 2014 Meritage blend is a reflection of what we strive for in both the grape growing and winemaking. We are crafting a wine to represent the highest quality of what we are capable of producing from the vineyard to the bottle. Only the best grapes and finished barrels go into this blend.
Grapes were de-stemmed into open top fermenters then cold soaked for 5-7 days. After cold soak, tanks were heated to encourage ambient yeast fermentation. No commercial yeasts were added. Extended maceration after the completion of alcoholic fermentation lasted up to 2 weeks, depending on tannin evolution. Malolactic fermentation in barrel was allowed to progress without inoculation. Wines were racked after malolactic and aged as varietals for 8 months prior to blending. After blending, wine spent an additional 18 months in 60% new French oak barrels prior to bottling.
